The Red Wind Howls
(Author: Tsering Döndrup)
‘Part Gulag Archipelago, part One Hundred Years of Solitude, The Red Wind Howls... [is an] urgent, tragic, and vital testimony for the Tibetan people.’ — Woeser, author of Forbidden Memory
When the Chinese Communist Party arrives in the Tibetan region of Tsezhung in the 1950s, young reincarnate lama Alak Drong has never heard of China. He innocently tells Party cadre Wang Aiguo that Tsezhung contains heaven and earth, while China is like a tiny line on his palm. Soon, that tiny line swallows his entire world whole.
After local Tibetan resistance in Amdo is crushed on the fateful "Harrowing Day," surviving men are rounded up and sent to labor camps. Alak Drong—once a revered figure answerable to no one—is subjected to beatings, starvation, and political re-education where survival demands confession, denunciation, and betrayal. Disciple turns on lama, brother turns on brother, and neighbor turns on neighbor.
Outside the camps, ancient monasteries are looted, sacred scriptures are destroyed, and compulsory collectivization ruins the fragile high-altitude grasslands, triggering a catastrophic famine. Through it all, a populace unfamiliar with political terms like "exploitation" is forced to confess to absurd crimes and worship foreign ideology in place of the Buddha.
Banned and suppressed upon its initial self-publication in 2006, The Red Wind Howls is a darkly satirical, unsparing masterpiece about how a community was forced to dismantle its faith, land, and culture—and call it liberation.
