ಕನ್ನಡದ ಮೊದಲ ಅಂಕಣಕಾರ ಯಾರೆನ್ನುವ ಬಗ್ಗೆ 'ಇದಮಿತ್ಥಂ' ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುವ ಹಾಗೆ ಇಲ್ಲದಿದ್ದರೂ ಅಂಕಣವನ್ನು ಒಂದು ಪ್ರಕಾರವನ್ನಾಗಿ ನೆಲೆಗೊಳಿಸಿದ್ದರಲ್ಲಿ ನಿರಂಜನ ಅಗ್ರಗಣ್ಯರು ಎನ್ನುವುದು ನಿಸ್ಸಂದೇಹವಾಗಿದೆ. ಕನ್ನಡ ಪತ್ರಿಕಾ ಲೋಕದಲ್ಲಿ 'ಅಂಕಣ' ಬರೆಹಕ್ಕೆ ಗಟ್ಟಿ ತಳಪಾಯ ಹಾಕಿದ ಶ್ರೇಯಸ್ಸು ನಿರಂಜನರಿಗೆ ಸಲ್ಲುತ್ತದೆ.
ಒಟ್ಟು 13 ಅಂಕಣಗಳ ಪೈಕಿ ಏಳು ಅಂಕಣ ಬರೆಹಗಳು ಸಂಕಲನ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಕಟವಾಗಿವೆ. ಅವರ ಅಂಕಣಗಳು ಪ್ರಕಟವಾದ ಪತ್ರಿಕೆಗಳ ಸಂಖ್ಯೆ ಮಾತ್ರವಲ್ಲದೆ ಮುದ್ರಿತ ಅಂಕಣ ಬರೆಹಗಳ ಪ್ರಮಾಣವೂ ಗುಣಮಟ್ಟವೂ ವಿಷಯವೈವಿಧ್ಯವೂ ಅಗಾಧವಾದುದಾಗಿದೆ. ನಿರಂಜನರ ಲೇಖನಿಯಿಂದ ಮೂಡಿದ ಒಟ್ಟು ಅಂಕಣ ಬರೆಹಗಳ ಸಂಖ್ಯೆ ಸುಮಾರು 2000.
ನಿರಂಜನರ ಮರುಓದು ಸರಣಿಯ ಅಂಕಣ ಬರೆಹಗಳ ಈ ಸಂಗ್ರಹದಲ್ಲಿ 1950ರಿಂದ 1970ರ ವರೆಗಿನ ಸಾಧನ ಸಂಚಯ, ಅಂಕಣ. ರಾಜಧಾನಿಯಿಂದ ಮತ್ತು ದಿನಚರಿಯಿಂದ ಸಂಕಲನಗಳಿಂದ ಆಯ್ದ 33 ಬರೆಹಗಳಿವೆ. ಇವುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ವೈಯಕ್ತಿಕ ಅನಿಸಿಕೆ, ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ-ಸಾಹಿತಿಗಳ, ಸಾಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಕ ನೀತಿ, ಮಾಧ್ಯಮ, ವಿಜ್ಞಾನ-ತಂತ್ರಜ್ಞಾನ, ನಾಡು-ರಾಜಕೀಯ ಮತ್ತು ಜಾಗತಿಕ-ಹೀಗೆ ವರ್ಗೀಕರಿಸಲಾದ ಅಧ್ಯಾಯಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರತಿ ವಿಷಯಗಳ 3-4 ಬರೆಹಗಳಿವೆ. ಇವುಗಳನ್ನು ಅವರ ವಿಷಯ, ಶೈಲಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅಗಾಧ ವೈವಿಧ್ಯತೆ, ಧೋರಣೆಗಳನ್ನು ಮತ್ತು ಮೂರು ದಶಕಗಳ ದೀರ್ಘಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರ ಬೆಳವಣಿಗೆಯನ್ನು ಬಿಂಬಿಸುವಂತೆ ಆಯ್ದುಕೊಳ್ಳಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಕೆಲವು ಬರೆಹಗಳು ನಿರಂಜನರೇ ಸ್ವತಃ ಸಂಪಾದಿಸಿ 1987ರಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಕಟವಾದ ತಮ್ಮ ಬರೆಹಗಳ ವಾಚಿಕೆ 'ಪ್ರತಿಧ್ವನಿ'ಯಿಂದ ಆಯ್ದವು.
