100 years ago, new and exciting Information on astronomy were pouring out almost every second day. The elate readers of English Journals and books conveyed the excitement to the locals in the form of lectures, here, in India. A handful of people with proficiency in both English and the regional languages took up the tough task of writing monographs and books. Prof Tirumala Rao Madhavarao Patil (1894 -1964), a mathematics professor at the Karnataka College, Dharwad was well versed in astronomy. This book is his effort to share his knowledge in Kannada, at the behest of the doyen of Kannada literature, Aluru Venkatarao. The book gains importance as the first of its kind. The language is very simple and the lucid style with innovative analogies keeps the reader engaged till the end. The objective of translation in to English is to provide an insight into the efforts and also a summary of the contemporary research in astronomy. The nuclear fusion reactions were not heard of. Pluto was not yet discovered. The book also brings to light the forgotten author, Prof TM Patil.
