When the Chinese Communist Party arrives in Tsezhung in the 1950s, the young reincarnate lama Alak Drong has never heard of the People’s Republic of China. He tells Party cadre Wang Aiguo that Tsezhung contains heaven and earth, and that China is merely a tiny line on his palm. Soon, that tiny line swallows his entire world.

After Tibetan resistance in Amdo is crushed on the fateful "Harrowing Day," surviving men are rounded up and sent to labor camps. Alak Drong—once revered and answerable to no one—is beaten, starved, and forced into a brutal regime of confession and betrayal, turning disciple against lama, brother against brother, and neighbor against neighbor. Outside, monasteries are emptied, sacred scriptures destroyed, traditional pastures ruined by forced collectivization, and widespread famine ensues.
