Those social upheavals made it clear to Adi Shankaracharya that spiritual power alone was not enough to face all these challenges. So, he prepared warriors. The monasteries built to train them became known as Akharas. The trained army of warriors became a shield, protecting people from foreign invaders. Even kings and emperors sought their cooperation during foreign invasions. In history, the Naga Sadhus held such an honored position. They participated in battles, disregarding their lives. After India gained independence, the Akharas moved away from military pursuits, and then the Naga Sadhus adopted the vow of leading a disciplined life, studying and following the eternal values of Indian culture and philosophy."

Naga Sadhus are Hindu ascetics. They remain naked and perform rigorous physical practices. They are skilled in the art of war. They reside in different Akharas. Joining their tradition of ascetic life is very difficult; no one is easily admitted into an Akhara. Elements like penance, celibacy, detachment, meditation, renunciation, and loyalty and devotion according to Dharma, etc., are tested for many years.

"When the country faces danger, when civilization and culture are threatened, we, as its inheritors, stand guard. To protect Dharma, we ultimately fight to remove the cloud of danger hovering over Dharma," say the Naga Sadhus.
