Counter-Myth of Secular-Feminist Values

The essence of 'Lakshmi Purana' is that Lakshmi, having entered the house of her untouchable devotee Sriya, was prevented from entering the temple by Jagannath on the advice of his elder brother Balarama. Consequently, both suffered without food and water due to her curse, and finally, with repentance, Jagannath accepted Lakshmi.

For us southerners, who know the legends of the sixty-three ancient Shaivites, this is not a new concept. However, it is surprising and unique that such a purana originated in the Vaishnava tradition of the Puri Jagannath Temple, which denied entry to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on the grounds that she belonged to another religion!
Surprisingly, throughout the east, from West Bengal to the Telangana border, and along the coast, the "Purana," which has become a popular ritual, was authored by the 15th-century Odia poet Balarama Das.
This work stands out as a counter-myth because it challenges the patriarchal system of gender discrimination and the untouchable caste system, with Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, standing up to it.
It ignited a spark of revolution within traditionalism. However, it can be noted that the humanitarian values of this purana might have originally been the values of the tribal system. The story of the churning of the milk ocean, which led to Lakshmi's birth, originally belongs to the Kolas and Mundas. Similarly, Puri Jagannath is not Vishnu; he is the tribal deity or ancestral father of the Savara tribe called Neel Madhav (for details, see the work 'Daru Pratima Na Pujibe'). When the concept of Jagannath's worship by the Savaras, along with the Kolas' churning of the milk ocean story, was pushed into the Vedic culture of Yajna, which is outside the religion of worship, tribal values were rejected and forcibly assimilated into the Vedic framework! The tremors and vibrations of this aggressively cultural assimilation also affected the 15th-century poet Balarama Das. Nevertheless, could those who practice the ritual have become secular? It didn't happen. That is, this Vedic culture has a static religious structure that roots negative beliefs more deeply than divine consciousness! This work, 'Lakshmi Purana,' which all Kannadigas, especially women and children, must read, can facilitate new cultural discussions and research. Prof. B. Gangadharamurthy, who translated this work and presented it to Kannada readers, is definitely commendable.
