A historian has no such relationship with changing politics. His relationship is only with the information he has in his hands. When new information becomes available, the historian changes his previous positions. But communal historians are different. They distort history as they wish for the purpose of establishing power and create false information. Communalism is a narrow sentiment of those belonging to a specific religious community, and it does not tolerate or respect people belonging to other religious communities. A strong belief of communalists is that people of different religions cannot live as equal citizens within one nation. But the history of India neither believes this nor accepts it. We all know what happened to the story of Uri Gowda and Nanje Gowda, which arose during the election. In the present book, the author Naveen Soorinje has reassembled much of the information already available about Hyder and Tipu, and has effectively broken down the history built by communalists. Monarchy employs many tactics to retain its power. It suppresses opponents. It uses communities. All of these are in this small book. Ajilas, Bangas, Chowtas, Hegades, Kodavas, Christians, Muslims, Konkanis, Gowdas, Jains of the coast – everyone clashes with the state or forms friendships. Where did communalism come in here? Scholars like Polali Sheenappa Hegade, Keshava Krishna Kudda, B. A. Saletore, P. Gururaj Bhat, who wrote the history of the coast, never called Hyder and Tipu communalists.
